Undulating Grid

A mosaic of rust and blush tesserae, the grid wavering as it crosses the field so that nothing sits quite square. Every tessera is carved and raised above the cream ground — this is the most tactile piece in the collection, and the one already woven and photographed on the loom in Kathmandu.

Opus tessellatum is the Roman technique of building an image from small tesserae of uniform size — the method behind most Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine mosaic. Translated into wool, the tesserae keep their edges but lose their rigidity, and the grid breathes.

Hand-knotted in Kathmandu on a Tibetan loom, where a continuous yarn is looped around a gauge rod and cut row by row to release the pile. Graded 60, 80 or 100 knot on the Nepali trade's standard scale. Himalayan wool, over 1,400 colours. Made to order in 12 to 16 weeks in production, in your size, your palette and your pile height — every piece woven new, for one interior only.
