Sand Labyrinth

A fine labyrinth texture carved across golden sand — dense, continuous, and never quite repeating. It behaves like a textile at a distance and like a drawing up close.

The labyrinth set into the nave pavement at Chartres is the enduring example: a single path, no choices, walked rather than solved. Its date has never been recorded — somewhere around 1200 to 1220 — and for most of the year it lies under the cathedral's chairs. A pattern meant to be met underfoot, which is where this one is too.

Hand-knotted in Kathmandu on a Tibetan loom, where a continuous yarn is looped around a gauge rod and cut row by row to release the pile. Graded 60, 80 or 100 knot on the Nepali trade's standard scale. Himalayan wool, over 1,400 colours. Made to order in 12 to 16 weeks in production, in your size, your palette and your pile height — every piece woven new, for one interior only.
