Since 2018 we have been turning artists' work into hand-knotted textile — and the discipline that requires is the same discipline behind every rug we sell.
TeHer Art Rugs grows out of AKA, a production atelier that works with contemporary artists and craft workshops to translate an image into a woven object. It is not printing and it is not reproduction. A drawing has to be re-thought knot by knot: which line survives at 80 knots and which needs 150, how a wash of colour becomes a dyed batch of wool, where the weave should carve and where it should stay flat.
Over the past years the atelier has produced commissioned editions for contemporary art galleries — including three separate commissions for one Mexico City gallery across three consecutive years, each with a different artist — and work produced in the atelier has been shown at an international art fair in Mexico City in 2026.
Editions are typically produced as 20 numbered pieces plus one artist's proof and two printer's proofs, with the artist approving the strike-off before the edition is woven.
Different work asks for different hands. We produce where the technique lives:
For artists and galleries. If you are considering an edition in textile, we handle the whole path: reading the work, proposing technique and knot density, strike-offs for approval, production, and delivery. Editions, proofs, credit and royalties are agreed in writing before anything is woven.
For collectors and designers. The rugs on this site are our own designs, made to order. For a bespoke size, a finer weave, or a piece developed specifically for a project, write to us and we will quote it.
Artist editions currently available are listed with the rest of the collection. Names of the artists we work with are published only with their written agreement — a rule we would rather keep than break.
